The slick 60s sheen doesn't quite hit like the noirish 40s hopelessness of the B&W original. But it's still a perfectly watchable and fatalistic reminder of how crime doesn't pay.

Best known for starring Ronald Reagan in his only villainous role, this remake of the 1946 classic noir isn't quite as good. But it punches up the violence and Lee Marvin makes a natural fit as the antiheroic assassin. Reagan himself isn't too bad as the heavy although he reportedly hated his part. The mood is relentless and nihilistic, with Marvin delivering some great 'tough guy' one-liners.

Definitely prefer the 1946 version.The 1964 version was alright but a little cheezy
