Classic film noir where Ralph Meeker plays a tough-as-nails private eye named Mike Hammer. The plot sounds like a typical detective story with a complicated plot and nasty characters set within a seedy criminal underworld lurking below the service of Los Angeles. But as Hammer dives deeper into the mystery, not everything is what it seems. And there's one helluva genre turn that the movie takes in its second half that still pays off today.

"Kiss Me Deadly" is a film noir like few others. It was a lower budget film with a signature style, had some truly sinister characters who do some very heinous things, and ends on a climactic scene that feels straight out of "The Twilight Zone."

Although I think they try too hard to shoe-horn in the whole Cold War/nuclear angle, but I love Ralph Meeker's dark anti-hero depiction of Mike Hammer - and the dames ain't half-bad either - as noir, it only half-way works for me, but it's worth watching just for a different take on an iconic character.

One of the more iconic noir films created, Kiss Me Deadly combines a slow burn plot with themes of Cold War paranoia and intrigue (unusual for an LA detective film.) The characters are appropriately off-the-wall and Ralph Meeker's Mike Hammer cooly chews the scenery in every chiroscoro scene. The film's ambiguous opening is one of the best openings of all noir or crime films, in my opinion.
