According to sources, director Peter Brook filmed 60 hours of footage - none of it scripted for the most part - and then edited the material down to get this film. It is rough and shot in a documentary-style but it pretty much matches the feel of the book (where savagery quickly overtakes civilized behavior amongst a group of children that survive a plane crash). It's a risk to film it in this way, but it pays off.

Director Brook manages to convey most of the story's metaphor through distinct visuals. The cheap-budget, real wildlife setting, and entire cast of very young boys adds a raw and troubling nature that would normally be tough to convey in 60's censored cinema. The fact that it still resonates the same way today is a strong testament to the filmmaking.
