Fantastic drama about an industrious businesswoman (Crawford) juggling her work with one tumultuous relationship after another. Especially her spoiled daughter (Ann Blyth). Great work by a supporting cast including Bruce Bennett, Eve Arden, Jack Carson, and Zachary Scott. Told in flashback, the movie covers a lot of material and draws an excellent lead performance by Joan Crawford.

"Milder Pierce" is more of a crisis-heavy melodrama than a psychological thriller or film noir. Joan Crawford is just stellar as a woman who is preyed upon and used by almost everyone close to her.

What starts out as a pretty standard noir becomes a dark masterwork that uses a basic whodunit to frame a tragic tale of a broken family. The film is populated with fully-fleshed and interesting characters - from the scheming and leaching Monte Baragan to Mildred's materialistic daughter, Veda. The cast is impressive and gives life to what is already a sharply-written script. I went in expecting a typical weepy drama and came out blown away by the freshness and intensity of the film.

An excellent movie. I don't usually like Joan Crawford (out of reverence for Bette Davis), but I liked this wonderful film.
