The accents were a bit hard to decipher for this Yank, but Gary Oldman's directorial debut is a powerful piece of cinema. It's not pretty - drugs, abuse, violence - but the portrayal of such a life is both gritty and impressive. It's not going to lift your spirits but it will leave you with a good movie experience.

Gary Oldman's directorial debut is a slickly written piece about life in a lower class London neighborhood. The film's real star, however, is the performances, particularly fearless and utterly magnetic portrayals by Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke. The film is tragic, often funny, and has powerful scenes of heartbreaking honesty.
