Bette Davis and Paul Henreid carry this drama about a woman recuperating from a nervous breakdown brought about by her domineering crone of a mother. Solid support by Claude Rains and Gladys Cooper is much appreciated. This could have easily been far more melodramatic and cliche but instead it feels mature and thoughtful.

What a talent that Bette Davis had for finding (and demanding) challenging, meaty characters. This is just another great notch on Davis' belt.

Bette Davis kicks ass as an old spinister bogged down by her mother who falls in love with everyone and finally finds someone who deserves her.
