Released in 1960, the same year as Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece "Psycho, "Peeping Tom" remains a nerve-tingling psychological thriller too ahead of its time for its contemporary audience.

Some groundwork for future similar films (most notably 'Maniac' and it's remake) can be seen in this unusual 60's thriller. Unusual type of thriller for the time, that is. Filmmaking techniques play as big of a part as the story. The two go hand-in-hand in giving insight to this dangerous voyeuristic character. He rides the line of sympathy and scary perfectly, so that we understand his situation but still condone his actions. Many scenes subtly induce fear, which exactly parallel his own filming studies of his victims. Very interesting and understated.

Peeling back the layers of an interesting psychological study, Michael Powell examines the nature of fear and obsession. The film's main unique device is its frequent adoption of the first person perspective, which achieves an unsettling effect. The film's controversial scenes are tame by today's standards, but Peeping Tom still packs a punch when it comes to emotional impact.

The history behind the film is just as fascinating as the movie itself. Michael Powell was essentially banned in the UK following the scandal of this film. It is very effective at showing some difficult subject matter, even after all these years. Well worth seeking out.

Now revered as a classic British Horror Movie, Peeping Tom was not given such a good reception when it was released in 1960. The intense controversy garnered at the time practically destroyed the career of one of the finest British directors in history. Michael Powell was virtually ostracized and blacklisted due to the extreme controversy raised. Even by today's permissive standards, Peeping Tom touches on some fairly taboo subjects. It is a bold, brave and imaginative movie whose stature has increased dramatically over the years. Regarded quite rightly as a masterpiece of modern cinema, Peeping Tom still has the power to send a shiver down the spine.

Excellent movie by director Michael Powell. I was sort of indifferent by The Red Shoes. However, this movie proved to me what he was all about. This movie was also directed without Pressberger, so I think I liked it a lot more. MP's obsession with redheads is both funny and tragic.
