The cast and the locale are spellbinding and elevate the material to an entertaining and intriguing thriller. This is still miles away from "The Talented Mr. Ripley" of which it is supposedly a sequel.

Malkovich gives one of the finest performances of his career. It is such a pity then that neither the mise-en-scene, nor the supporting cast, can do it justice.

The only reason why I wanted to watch this film was because it is the sequel to one of my favourite films of all time, "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Instead of Matt Damon playing the charismatic Tom Ripley, John Malkovich takes on the challenge in this semi-engaging but hopelessly flawed thriller. Although it had its moments, such as the metro-multiple-murde r scene, as a whole, it lacked what made "The Talented Mr. Ripley" so haunting. John Malkovich's Ripley is too cold-hearted which made it that more difficult for the audiences to relate their own vanities and insecurities. It goes to show that without balance, an extremely fascinating character can get reduced to a babbling, typical criminal.
