In a precursor to mumblecore, Karel Reisz tells a tragic story of a young man struggling for significance amid mounting pressures. The film's best scenes are the ones so raw and direct that they mirror real life. The downfall (and ultimately why I didn't quite care for the film) is that, like real life, the film is sometimes slow-moving and boring.
