A historical film that's way too into itself...

The Spirit of St. Louis has a great story to tell and it cannot be denied that it wastes no time on telling the story of Charles Lindbergh's historic non-stop flight across the Atlantic in 1927. James Stewart is enthusiastic in the role and does not phone it in which makes it more tolerable. The problem though is the script's self-indulgent tendencies. It's too long for its own good and it's to the point where you don't care whether or not some parts actually happened because you're more concerned as to whether or not the movie will end at all. There is nothing wrong with a biographical film being fascinated with its own real-life protagonist but it's no excuse for overstaying your welcome to the point that viewers will be tired of seeing them.
