Suspenseful drama about a Nazi war criminal (Welles) hiding out in an all-American town; married to a beautiful wife (Young); and has an obsession with fixing clocks. Robinson is good as the UN official tracking him down. The style and tone is very Hitchcockian in the best sense.

A detective named Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) of the United Nations War Crimes Commission searches for Nazi renegade Franz Kindler (Orson Welles). Franz changes his identity to Charles Rankin and Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young) marries him. Kindler strangles Meinike who might divulge his real identity. Wilson warns Mary’s brother and exposes “the mind” of Franz Kindler in terms of genocide and a hobby of clocks to her. “Murder can be a chain…” The score, direction and acting were good. It tends to drag in the middle, best portions were the beginning and near conclusion much similar to Vertigo. Welles acting here deserves recognition. A decent mystery drama with a wonderful screenplay, The Stranger is worth watching.
