Funny movie, first of several for Rainn?

This movie was pretty freaking funny. Rainn Wilson did a really good job. I was very skeptical that he could sustain an entire movie as the lead comic actor because it is pretty hard to do but I was very pleasantly surprised.
The review that framed it as "40 year old virgin meets School of Rock" is probably the best way to describe it. It definitely had both of those feels at times (the end concert was absolutely a School of Rock ripoff). That being said I felt like there wasn't much development. I was looking for more sideplots, hindrances, and development of romances and/or rivalries and this movie had all of them but they didn't focus on and develop many of them.
Example of under developed aspects that were touched upon *CAUTION POSSIBLE SPOILER*

The Rainman delivers

Who knew Rainn Wilson had it in him to step into Jack Black's shoes and just rock out in all his glory. You can't deny there are obvious similarities between this movie and JB's School or Rock. But then just when you thought you had seen everything, you're probably wrong. The Rocker surprisingly holds up on its own with style and rockin comedy. I really thought he could never in a million years pull off his character as a musician and looked that believable playing but yes he did. He's just as crazy as good old Jack, the only thing he's missing is a beer belly well that's a good thing. One other thing I like is the story line, they kept it pretty simple and is just at the right pace. The supporting …

This rocker really rocks!

An advance screening pass to a movie about which I could learn precious little, resulted in a delightful movie experience. Seldom lately have I been able to recommend a "sleeper", but "The Rocker" is a true gem.
Rainn Wilson (Dwight from "The Office") is an aging drummer, bitter over his dismissal from the rock band that eventually became a worldwide sensation. When the opportunity to play in his nephew's band during Prom unexpectedly arises, the two generations clash hilariously.
At times, the movie is slapstick, with Wilson the butt of the joke. At others, just flat out funny. But it's a perfect mix and does not come across as uneven. Likewise, the story has heart, but never approaches too much sentimentality.
"The Rocker" is full of familiar faces in small roles. And …
