"Happy-Go-Lucky" is often funny and lead by a shimmering performance from Sally Hawkins.

The movie is about a thirty-year-old teacher Poppy (Hawkins) always has a smile on her face, and does her best to brighten the days of those around her by making small talk and cracking jokes. For the past ten years, Poppy has lived with her best friend, Zoe (Alexis Zegerman), a fellow teacher whose wry outlook on life serves as the perfect counterbalance to Poppy's effervescent charm. Mike Leigh the director of this film always brings that special look to his movie what I mean is movies like this always bore me but this movie didn't.

An excellent feature that even has a Mr. Vertigo reference. I've considered changing my life because of this one! I still am surprised that Sally Hawkins got so much attention over this role, but at the same time I think it's deserved. The bonus features on the DVD confirmed how well crafted the script was. It may not seem like the formulaic films of Hollywood where there's a good and bad guy and someone has to win, but that's exactly why it's so refreshing. Sally's character Poppy (whose real name is Polly) always made me laugh. And her weird infectious laugh (it seems that she has asthma) is adorable. The character of the driving teacher added a lot to the film as well. Best Character List: Poppy

Not worthy of any Golden Globe nominations, but still not the worst movie of the year. The plot is pointless, the story line downright boring. The main character is interesting but the ending really made me wonder why I wasted 2 hours.

A film where nothing happens, and really lacks a plot. That would be fine if it is funny but it is not. The main character is just annoying and played annoyingly. All here friends are just as annoying and they have nothing interesting to do or say. There was a part of the film I liked though and that was all the scenes with the driving instructor who is very well played, although I think I could act just like that if I was around the main character for too often. This scenes actually are interesting because of the incredible difference between the characters, but there is not enough of it to make up for the rest of the film.

I thought such unconditionally optimistic characters like this only existed in fairy tales such as Enchanted, but alas I was wrong. We have seen boatloads of cynical bastards in movies so why not the complete opposite. Being a die hard pessimist myself it was interesting to see how the other side lives and surprisingly I didn't feel like choking anyone. It's usually those downer, I have so much to over come performances that get all the praise so it's unfortunate that Sally Hawkins will ultimately be overlooked for this memorable role as the perpetually cheerful Poppy. It was delightful to spend two hours in her company.
