A meditative and thought-provoking picture of war, "Waltz With Bashir" is probably the first time I've ever witnessed the combining of animation with the devastation of crisis in the Gaza region.

A powerful documentary that is told in pseudo-fiction format and utilizes a striking surrealistic animation approach. The visuals will stick with you, but it's also an interesting approach to dissecting a controversial and murky portion of Israeli-Palestinian history from a variety of perspectives. The ending is truly haunting.

Movies often produce vital history lessons for those ignorant or unaware of certain events. Waltz with Bashir, a unique animated documentary graphically depicts events during the Lebanon War through the eyes of filmmaker Ari Folman. A movie which is banned in most Arab countries (although this is not unusual for Israeli films) Bashir, although politically controversial and highly ambiguous is still a remarkable achievement. Capturing a turbulent and merciless past, Bashir acts as a blueprint for the future and its anti war stance should be applauded rather than vilified.

A brilliant and moving film, Walts with Bashir follows one man as he tries to remember his role as a soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War. This leads him to several conversations with his fellow soldiers, each one offering disturbing, sometimes horrifying revelation about what was done. Though it is animated, it is quite violent and graphic, but very powerful. The final frames show real life pictures from the event which really drive the film home.

This movie was excellent! The animation and style was interesting and innovative. The storytelling was brilliant and captivating. The artistic direction and some of the shots they used were breathtaking. Great panoramic shots, panning landscapes, dream like shots make this movie truly stand out. The music was an amazing fit as well and added a music video quality to the surrounding destruction that was very powerful. Many movies have several of the things I've mentioned but this movie not only had them all but sacrificed not a drop of story telling ability, interest, and power. This is probably my favorite movie of 2008.
