Bloated but brawny epic about the Battle of the Alamo. Director and producer John Wayne stars as famed frontiersman Davy Crockett who led the doomed defense. The cast is good, especially Richard Widmark and Laurence Harvey. Battle scenes are well staged and the sheer scope of the film is impressive. It probably grapples more ideas than it has time to ponder. But John Wayne keeps the movie well paced despite its great length.

John Wayne starred in plenty of westerns. Unfortunately, his first time directing one results in one of the underwhelming films of his career.

This version of the Alamo is far superior to the 2004 more action-oriented film. The siege of the Alamo is still presented in vivid detail, but we are able to spend more time prior with the characters and this makes their sacrifice and heroism more significant to me.
