Contains some pieces of a great gangster epic, but not all of them. Johnny Depp is very convincing as John Dillinger but we are never given a clear picture of who he or Christian Bale's Melvin Purvis were, and the cat-and-mouse chase between them isn't as exciting as it should be.

This movie was way to long and the way the movie is shot is a bit messy. But on the bright side, it does have a good cast and actors.

Good movie but I hate how people change around the story to suit a movie

I found this movie extremely boring. Sure it had great performances and directing. But it was just so dull. You can't hear what Johnny Depp is saying, so instead of telling him to talk louder, they just get rid of the score. The action sequences were good, but there were so little of them. So, if you're looking for a great crime movie like "Little Caesar" or "Bonnie and Clyde", look somewhere else.

A bit too dry, a lot too long - I think the casting was good, but the pacing was all wrong and just when I thought things were going to wrap up nicely... I saw there was another hour left. A lot of effort but not much payoff.

The film style kinda took me out of it. I think they used digital camera or something, but its the 30s so its more distracting than anything else. And I feel a historical film should make you want to learn more about the subject. Not with this one, I barely cared what happened to Dillinger by the end. I know there are plenty of films that are longer, but this one felt long

Match up Christian Bale, Billy Crudup, Johnny Depp, Michael Mann, and Marion Cotillard and what you have is a gumbo only fit for a madman...and luckily I'm mad as hatter! I loved the style in which this movie was filmed, it was pure and raw at the same time. A great matchup of cast and beautifully scripted...the movie was genius. Depp and Bale should be up for the Oscar for this one.

Basically a pretty standard action movie that I still found myself entertained by maybe because I am very into historical films especially more accurate ones. Although it really does not get into the mind of any of the characters very well in this film, it was enjoyable to watch the various gun fights and real life scenes played out well in the film, such as an escape from jail. The era feeling is well established in everyway possible but it fails to follow a few things up such as the beginning of the FBI basically fade at the end of the film. All in all though it was still good thanks mostly due to technical aspects.

Compared to some of the crap that's come out this summer (Wolverine, Transformers 2, G.I. Joe), this movie looks like Citizen Kane. It's not your traditional summer movie because, God forbid, Michael Mann makes you use your brain in this movie. This isn't Heat, but it's definitely worth the watch. Check it out, because in this summer of mediocre movies, this is the best drama movie not named The Hurt Locker.

Public Enemies is yet again proof of how good and especially stylish director Michael Mann is. This is not his best work to date, but definitely one to see. And of course it goes without saying that Johnny Depp was great in portraying the infamous criminal John Dillinger.
