"The Lovely Bones" is an utter mess in story and tone.

A weirdly emotionally dissonant film that goes dark places without heart or purpose. Stanley Tucci turns in a masterfully despicable performance as a child murderer, but everyone else in the cast sleepwalks through their roles. The film tries to make something wonderful out of a distasteful event and it doesn't work at all.

There are some stunning parts to this film, but I never quite felt the emotional connection that I thought would come through. The actors were cast well enough - even Mark Wahlberg was pretty good - but it just lacked that spark to bring it to the next level for me.

Visually stunning, pretty good acting all around, but hobbled by a maudlin voiceover taken straight from the novel (which was so bad I couldn't finish it). I'd still recommend it, but the sappiness keeps it from getting a 3/4 from me.

"the lovely bones" has an incredible story line. you will love the drama and thrill on it. the movie is both smart and touching at the same time. actors and actresses are amazing. they done it very very good! Peter Jackson is, indeed, one of the best directors. the real world and the fantasy world were executed amazingly in the film. "the lovely bones" is an excellent movie... BUT.. i was expecting for a better ending.. *spoiler alert* yes- as what was presented in the film-, the world gives justice to the victims of Mr. Harvey but i will love it if the Salmons have doe it (although, somehow, they did because of Lindsey) over-all, its worth watching for! =)

I had never read the book before, but the movie was really good! Although they left out a few details in the movie, according to one of my friends. Over all good movie, would be a little creepy for little kids though

A riveting adaptation of the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold, Peter Jackson takes bold steps in ascertaining honesty and fantasy at the same time, achieving wonderful attacks on ideas of death, departure, and guilt. Saoirse Ronan is brilliant in a follow-up acting job to "Atonement." Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon are equally so, offering profound female energy to this story of abusive men. Mark Wahlberg and Michael Imperioli offer masculine power to the strictly female-driven plot. And Stanley Tucci is chilling in his portrayal of one of the most evil villains in cinematic history.

This film started with a lot of potential. Solid cast, good story, etc... The problem is, I'm not sure it ever knew where it was going. The religous conotations completly outwayed and overpowered the film, and any story that may have been there from the start was completly lost. I have not read the book, but the film became complicated and somewhat confusing the further it went, which leads me to believe that the adaptation was not good. In the end, it does tie together somewhat, but it was far too little too late. I stayed for the entire viewing, which was more than several people in the same theatre did. I would not recommend this film.

A decent adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel, though much of the themes of letting go and moving on are shortened, which may be better, because I don't know if that would have been an interesting movie to watch. Instead, the main focus is on Susie watching from "the in-between" as her family struggles to cope with her murder, as well as try to solve it themselves. Good work from the cast, particularly Stanley Tucci as the villainous murderer.
