It's really hard to describe this film - at heart, it is a simple and poignant portrait. Under the surface, however, it's an almost allegorical description of human sacrifice and tragedy, seen through the eyes of a donkey. I know that sounds silly, but, trust me, it's not.

Sensitive, patient directorial effort from Robert Bresson; handles a simple subject with poetic moments, but it's solely for the patient viewer. Final Grade: B

A really fantastic movie that really gets to you. One of the top French films ever. Bresson is brilliant.

Bressons style is his lack of style. He reshoots each scene 20 times so that all of the acting is drained out of the actors and they look bored. This forces the viewer to draw their own conclusions rather than telling the viewer what to think. Or something like that. Needless to say, if you buy into that utter bullshit, you are a mental Amoeba. Bresson commits the ultimate directorial sin of boring the viewer. Lack of style, is lack of style. Sounds obvious doesn't it? Indeed.

Brilliant movie in every sense, from the slow pacing, directing, restrained acting to the humanity of it. It's the posters and reviews like the one above that make me love it even more each day passing...
