If "Bad Lieutenant" gets under your skin, good. It is supposed to. This uncompromising character piece from Abel Ferrera holds up as one of the 90s' most powerful morality plays, and features Harvey Keitel at his most fearless.

It's hard to get behind either the story or character for me - this corrupt cop who seems to make all the wrong choices whether it's drugs or getting deeper and deeper into debt while his family is all but forgotten - yet despite the unpleasant nature, Harvey Keitel gives an excellent performance. Uncomfortably watchable.

Typical of some of the odd choices Keitel made earlier on in his career. Shocking, violent and powerful, but his character can hardly be described as sympathetic! An uncomfortable, uncompromising examination of corruption.

He's not really a bad person, he just makes bad choices. In this film, Harvey is an all around bad cop with his focus in the wrong places. He's more woried about digging himself deeper in debt with his friends by betting on the world series and having dirty women give him drugs and sex than actually solving a case. However, when his new case involves a raped nun, we see him open up more. He gains a moral structure and has a new outlook on life by the end of the film. It's interesting to see the kind of man he turns into and the different and suprising choices he makes in the end.

I really don't like Abel Ferrara, and the story wasn't that great to me.
