Filmmaking and acting that are as electrifying as the songs give "La Bamba" more pep than the dozens of routine music biopics made, and its focus on layered characters and relatable story makes it more affecting than most of them as well.

Like Buddy Holly, the story of Ritchie Valens is one cut tragically short by a plane crash. Lou Diamond Phillips really shines in an otherwise rote biography. Good to watch at least once.
