An emotional powerhouse drama. Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster are stunning.

A different type of war film that focuses on the grief and aftermath of combat. Harrelson and Ben Foster (who I think is one of the greatest young actors working today) put in powerhouse performances that find a subtle balance between sadness and anger. The film touches on difficult themes that the average war film doesn't often explore.

A strongly acted film, with good performances from Foster and Harrelson as soldiers who inform families of their loved ones deaths in war. Both are battling their own demons as they are trying to readjust to their new lives. Gets a little dark at times which makes for a heavy viewing but these are probably the strongest performances I've seen from these actors. I wouldn't be surprised to see some Oscar nominations for this small film.

A movie effectively done with good acting throughout. It works because it humanizes the soldiers well in this movie without resorting to standard soldier can't stop fighting slop that other movies during this period is done. The movie is well adapt at showing the characters and realizing them well. It does not exploit anything to get feelings from the viewer but shows everything in a subtle way. The visits in the film are well done with each covering a different reaction well and I did not feel any were handled in the wrong way as they could have easily been. I feel since they did not go for over done fake emotions everything worked a lot better here than in the similar films with fantastic portraits of the two soldiers made.
