The original Grey Gardens was a documentary that examined the eccentric Edith Beale and her similarly named daughter, who withdrew from society into their mansion in the East Hamptons. As time went on and money ran out, their mansion deteriorated to a point where their relative, Jackie Kennedy, had to step in and help out.
This HBO film examines the early years of the Beale relationship all the way up to the making of the documentary. While Jessica Lange is good as the elder Edith, it isn't until Edith's old age that she really shines. Drew Barrymore, however, is incredible as the younger Edith. She disappears so far into the role you forget you're watching her. Both actors embody the characters so well they go beyond impersonation. An excellent production.
