A not all that shocking movie inspired by a shocking real-life murder mystery, "The Black Dahlia" has enough stylish flair but almost none of the nail-biting tension De Palma's best films are known for.

It tries to capture the old noir vibe, but only succeeds in being a look alike. It's messy story and lackluster conclusion makes it a frustrating watch.

Beautifully realized visually, but lacking in energy and life. This film is bleak and depressing in all the wrong ways and, more than that, it's pretty boring at times.

If I can quote The King "A little less conversation, a little more action please." As in, the movie suffered from too much tell, not enough show. This is a good film that could have been a great one.

Although better than Hollywoodland, which strangely enough came out about the same time, this movie does not compare to "L.A. Confidential" or any other film noir picture. Hartnett is good, but the story and the pacing are off. Just good.
