"Born on the Fourth of July" is not the only anti-war film out there, but it's easily the hardest to watch.

Tom Cruise plays a young man graduating high school during Vietnam war when he decides to enlist in the military. After his injury he is shocked with the treatment of war veterans but quickly learns the truths to the war as he fights for peace. Oliver Stone the director of Platoon makes this movie so dramatic and so powerful. Tom Cruise is so freaking good in this movie and I almost cried during the movie because of his character journey.

Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances, with a dark and lonesome portrayal of a struggling war veteran. The film drags at sections, but, at least, Oliver Stone abandons most of his knack for controversy to tell a straightforward and poignant story.

I am not much of a war movie buff, but I do like to see good character development in a movie. Somehow I'd always managed to miss this movie, partly because it starred Tom Cruise, but when I finally saw it I was very impressed by his portrayal of Ron Kovic--through a kaleidoscope of emotions, jarring episodes and epiphanies. The scenes of battle are harrowing, but no more so than his meltdown back home in front of his stupefied family. The parade scenes were shot a couple of miles from where I live, so that was a bonus for me.

Ahhhh, vintage Tom Cruise. I like it much more than the modern Tom Cruise.

The second and probabl last of Stone's Vietnam films. Not as good as Platoon, but, it deals more with the after effects of the war. Tom Cruise gives his best performance ever as paralyzed vet. Ron Kovic.

To me, this movie is infinitely better than Platoon. Better music, better story, and a better performance by cruise - he should have won the Oscar. This is a gritty look at war and it is pulled off to perfection. War fans must see it!
