I wanted this movie to be great because it really could have been. The character and plot with underlying themes were good and there was a lot of funny moments. The only thing that keep this movie at a 2.5 for me was Owen Wilson's character. It was just a little too much for me. It might also be because you are hit by the two Wilsons. He was just annoying. This would be a great TV show, where you get a nice 30min view and a week in between to give yourself a break of Wilson's character.

Wes Anderson's first feature demonstrates the birth of an auteur - bold choices in color and framing, some darkly comic lines, and some quirky performances from a cast who would end up being an Anderson staple in later films. This is just as funny as future Anderson films and feels far advanced in style for a first film.

Typical quirky indie comedy, with both Wilson brothers being weirdly funny together.

A definate first feature from an ambitious director. Its unfocused, but it does have a handful of scenes which work really well. Overall, not a bad start, but its rather insignificant against his other works. Darjeeling being his best.

Wes Anderson's first feature shows hints of greatness, and the Wilson duo works well, but compared to his other films it's unpolished and never quite reaches that apex. Still enjoyable.

Like "The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou," I don't know how to feel about this movie. At times it's funny but sometimes it's just plain boring. A lot of the motel scenes could've been cut out. When the film was about to reach its end, I didn't care what happened to the characters because I felt like I was sitting through a bad two and a half hour movie. The best thing about this movie is its script. The dialogue is crisp and witty. The Wilson brothers have good chemistry. Other than that, it has pretty much nothing going for it. The dry humour they have here is lackadaisical. Granted, it's one of Wes Anderson's first films so I decided to give this film a break. I don't hate it, I just somewhat don't prefer to watch it again.

The original Wilson Brothers/Wes Anderson comedy. It was great, but rough. They have developed well over time. I also caught the original short from (1994) which was a truancated version of Bottle Rocket. That was also delightful, albeit very rough.
