Probably more violence than needed, but Casey Affleck really showed some acting chops here. A great supporting cast (though the women seem more of an afterthought) makes this a pretty killer movie, though I agree with other reviewers that the end was a bit of a letdown. Still, overall a dark, disturbing yet fascinating noir-thriller.

Casey Afflecks character Lou Ford should get an award for Best Villain at any of the movie award shows out there or at least a nomination. His character should also be on any 50-100 Greatest Villains Of All Time List. This movie was at times VERY painful to watch & if Michael Winterbottom was going for shock then he definitely shocked me.Also it had a GREAT ending that I did not see coming

The movie kept my interest all throughout, then it got to the end and it was a total disappointment. Maybe it was the cheesiness of it, I don't know, but it was very anti-climactic...not that I expected a whole hell of a lot, but something that would have made me say, "damn that was a good movie" instead of "what in the hell did I just watch" would have been a lot better

Casey Affleck can carry a film, as we've seen with his past Oscar nomination, and his subtle wit works well as the eyes for the audience. Everyone in this plays a small town stereo-type to a tee, and Alba and Hudson never over-step their bounds as interchangeable victims of abuse and murder. The film boils to a blended, boiling head as our narrator announces which people he has allowed to have lines. You'll either be chuckling or gawking before his twisted, confused focus drags the you into a blazing furnace! Regardless, this is solely a showcase for Affleck's skills and it's an interesting clinic to watch, though there's not much else to enjoy.
