A secretive Elizabethan nobleman who wishes to stage his plays in order to politically influence the common people finds a willing stooge to put his name to them and preserve his identity; a man by the name of William Shakespeare.
Roland Emmerich abandons his familiar territory of the computer generated disaster movie to direct this historical potboiler that is part period drama, part tinfoil-hatted conspiracy theory. Thanks to some nice costume and set design and decent performances by the supporting cast, Anonymous can be quite atmospheric at times and the combination of political machinations and historical context maintains the interest - if you like this type of thing, of course. But it also has a kind of Hollywood slickness that seems at odds with the intrigue on the screen and …

Director Roland Emmerich, this time moved away from apocalyptic action movies and focused on a drama/mystery movie...
Anonymous is a movie set up in the Elisabethian Age in England. It is about Shakespeare or rather Edward DeVere, who according to this story, wrote the famous plays like "Juliet" or "Henry \/"
With a good start and a interesting idea the movie went down into a revolutionary action movie.
It is just Roland Emmerich who directs. If the director would have been Steven Spielberg or Robert Zemeckis or someone els this would have been one of the greatest movies of 2011. But the script still has some empty spaces which Roland Emmerich filled up with an unrealistic love story between Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Oxford. Moreover this whole subplot gets lost.
