"Haywire" by Yojimbo

When a freelance black ops agent is betrayed by her employer she must evade capture by both the police and her erstwhile colleagues whilst tracking down the traitor to exact revenge. The plot to Haywire will never win any awards for originality but Steven Soderbergh's foray into Bourne territory is a nicely taut, no frills exercise in cold war style action that is a million miles from the glitz and bonhomie of the Ocean's franchise. He has clearly been watching the likes of From Russia With Love and Get Carter as the film has a very old school feel, with some bone crunching and brutal fight scenes. Not Sure Why A Lot of People Liked This Mess

Haywire is an interesting film - a sparse action thriller that plays with almost a documentary-feel to it. Sadly, that documentary-like quality doesn't necessarily translate to excitement or interest, as we are given little to no backstory for all the characters and, thus, are given not much to hold onto emotionally in the convoluted plot. The film is packed with A-list actors, but none of them are used to memorable effect and the heroes and villains play different shades of the same gray. The fight scenes are intense and clearly the film's highlight, though non-actor Gina Carano doesn't really dazzle in any of her dialogue scenes. Soderbergh tries to throw in a creative rack focus or framed shot here and there, but these visual touches don't have any motivation rooted in story and …

I had seen trailers, posters, and knew the plot of Haywire before I saw it recently. It looked like it was going to be another version of Salt. I thought Salt was an okay movie, but it didn’t measure up to the standard set by the Bourne franchise. The Bourne trilogy has definitely raised the bar for films in this genre. The modern version of the spy action thriller can never be viewed the same. With my anticipation (and expectations) high for The Bourne Legacy, I really wasn’t in the mood to see anything that might fall flat in comparison. Two things drew me into watching Haywire - the cast and the director. With the mix of actors in the cast, I felt certain that, at the least, the performances would be interesting and worth the watch.
