Much more complex than it first appears, "A Separation" is simultaneously a legal thriller, a slice-of-life, and a human condition drama that explores countless themes that can apply to all people regardless of nationality.

Not a bad standard drama, but I just couldn't get into it. It was not paced well and the subject matter did not spark much creativity. Nominated for best foreign language film, it does not live up to expectations. Skip it.

The best film of 2011, by far. Perfectly written. Perfectly acted. A masterpiece!

Although sometimes slow-moving, by its second half, this film becomes an intensely emotional look at Persian social and political graces. It's a unique portrait of the pain of divorce, juxtaposed with an equally painful legal investigation. The last scene is the film's most powerful.
