Guide Dogs 101

There is an art to storytelling that this movie doesn't have. I would argue that this movie doesn't even have a story. Instead, the movie presents a summary of the life of a guide dog: it's born, it's selected, it's trained, it's assigned, etc. The movie is too concerned with chronology and process. Very little of the movie deals with the relationship between Watanabe and Quill, and what little we get is actually kind of sad. Quill exists to serve his master, and when he isn't working he's kept in a tiny unprotected kennel. Watanabe appreciates the dog as a tool, not as a companion. Yet the viewer is expected to get teary-eyed when dog and master must part, and again when they're reunited, and again as required. This movie is like an emotionally-manipulative instructional manual.
