A sports farce that's funny from start to finish. Jay Baruchel's scenes as the foul-mouthed best friend are show stealing.

Not content with his job as a bouncer at a local Beantown bar and a bit of an embarrassment to his accomplished family, Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) dreams of the kind of success enjoyed by minor league hockey goon Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber). When a chance encounter with an on-ice thug leads to a bloody fist fight that Doug easily wins, the coach of the Halifax Highlanders sees potential in this mammoth sized man who is only hampered by his lack of any hockey playing ability and his brother's old figure skates. This movie has bloody violence and some funny scenes in it. Goon is not like your cliche spots movie this movie takes that cliche and take it to another level.

Why hadn't I heard of this film before? I absolutely loved it. A perfect sports-comedy full of violence, language, raunch, blood, and heart, the film's most important and resonant feature. The characters are great. I loved the cast; Seann William Scott is better than ever. Good script by Jay Baruchel. The surprise comedy of 2012.

There's a bittersweet romantic comedy buried in this brutal and sometimes vulgar sports film. Seann William Scott casts off his offensive typecasting to play a more sweet and optimistic character whose tentative romance with Alison Pill is the movie's most believable and charming parts. The film isn't a nonstop laugh riot, though Scott's motley cast of teammates offers their eclectic brand of humor, but it is touching in the right ways and a uniquely human journey into the world of hockey that is unexpected.

I honestly think this is Seann William Scott's best performance. He plays Doug Glatt, an ultra-violent man when playing hockey, but actually quite kind and sensitive off the rink. He's both a crude, awkward and yes, even charming guy - and it makes this movie a whole lot of fun.

I was expecting just a raunchy hockey fighting comedy, but it turned out to be much more affectionate and personal. A crude, bloody and funny film that is also endearing.
