Sparse dialogue, beautiful scenery and a haunting story - Australian films can be hit or miss, but this is certainly one of the better efforts I have seen in recent years. Willem Dafoe is perfect for the role and supporting cast - including the children - were also a good choice. Moves slow, but worth it to stick through the end.

I wasn't quite pleased by the end of the movie -- I haven't read the book yet so I do not know how close it is to the original source -- but the scenery of Tasmania was extraordinarily beautiful and the story was told really neatly and gracefully. Willem Dafoe was of course perfect choice for this role; his tormented, always worried eyes certainly helped to stimulate sad allure of the film, especially appropriate when one of the characters is the gracious animal very recently made extinct.
