If you love "Groundhog Day," you might like this similarly funny and sweetly philosophical comedy almost as much.

An interesting view of the afterlife where your entire life is put on trial and you have to defend your mistakes - and either you get to ascend or you get sent back to try again. I love the restaurant scene, past lives pavilion and the overall sense of warmth the film brings out. Light but entertaining fun.

One of the very first film's I have viewed from the director, which was on a local channel. An executive, Daniel Miller (Albert Brooks), passes away and has a defense Atty. Bob Diamond (Rip Torn). Daniel falls for an amiable Julia (Meryl Streep). A wonderful look at his veriosn of Earth and Purgatory with humor instilled. The premise and screenplay was enlightening and funny at the same time. You'll be amazed how a symbolism of an escalator will be after viewing this though provoking comedy, Defending Your Life delivers.

Channeling a less neurotic Woody Allen, Brooks delivers a sharply written, subtly funny, and moving piece of life comedy. The ending itself is incredibly satisfying and Brooks and Streep share realistic and genuine chemistry on screen. I also liked Rip Torn's supporting role as Brooks' good-natured defender.

Before seeing this movie, I wasn't crazy about Albert Brooks. After it, I wanted to see everything I could get my hands on! (although I still haven't seen Mother). So anyway, it isn't realistic, but it's very endearing and heartwarming. This is one of those rare films that brightens your whole entire...life.

An Al Brooks great! I thought this film was so clever and funny. I really like Brooks' dry sense of humor.
