A movie of small-scale but ingenious craft, "Dial M for Murder" works like a finely oiled machine.

A good mid-tier Hitchcock film. Ray Milland is the star of this film as a husband who tries to come up with the perfect crime to kill his wife. Watching him, not just his actions, but his facial expressions, you can see how hard he is trying to make this crime go right. Hitchcock does a great job of giving us all of the clues and letting us trying to figure out how Milland was going to get caught.

Transfered from a stage play, and initially shot in 3D, this is one of Hitchcock's more unique entries into his latter filmography. I find a lack of his usual directing flair present, as is his tight grip on tension. I wan't involved with any of the characters. However, the dilemma created by the failure of the murder is mischievously interesting.

Dial M for Murder is not normally coined as one of Hitchcock's best films, but it is certainly one of his most satisfying.

Hitchcock may have "dialed in" his directorial performance - even so, this is just as good and suspenseful as any of his bigger, well-known films. Thanks to the charmingly smooth Ray Milliand, Grace Kelly as his wife and John Williams - it all comes together nicely. It's pretty much confined to one set, but in the end, that's all it needs.

A rare suspenseful thriller in which the audience is allowed to know quite a lot about the villain and yet the tension does not diminish. One of Hitchcock's simplest, but also one of his best.

The classic murder mystery. It's definitely Hitch's best. I love these types of movies. And, unfortunately, they don't make them like this anymore.

It is an interesting mystery where you as the audience actually know everything beforehand because you follow the wannabee murderer for the first part. Therefore you get in on his plan and that is very interesting. The second part does not work as well because you really know what way it is going to go and it takes just a bit too long to get there. The first is really interesting and thrilling but the second just seems like they need to get the story all wrapped up.

Hitchcock has found a way to weasel his way into my life. For years, I was perfectly content to denounce his movies, calling them boring and slow…even when two of my three friends who studied film production claimed him as their end-all favorite director. I boldly argued with people who actually know what they are talking about. But then I watched this movie. It began as a hit play and it’s one of the three movies that Hitchcock filmed in color. Grace Kelly is gorgeous, the suspense remains high throughout and there’s a murder with little blood and no guts. These things make me happy. Hitchcock, I like you. Let's do lunch.
