A new kind of mafia film, "Eastern Promises" struck me as a Russian version of "The Godfather" with a fittingly grim nature.

A very interesting movie. Never really picks up into anything, just kind of goes alone and tells a magnificent story.

Viggo Mortensen gives a bold and raw performance in Cronenberg's second film in his recent foray into linear crime films. The film deals with themes of violence, brutality, and redemption in a clearer manner than in History of Violence and succeeds in crafting an exciting thriller that also deals with deeper content.

Good film. Interesting. Intense. Could be better. And ending was just great.

Russian "cleaner" Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) gets an important diary from Anna Khitrova (Naomi Watts), a British-Russian midwife at a London hospital. Had some realistic fight scenes and twists in the story. Mortensen shows a remarkable performance and Watts was solid. Only reservations this reviewer had was the conclusion and lack of better action from the lead. Eastern Promises is a gripping drama about the Russian mob.

Cool crime story, with ruthless characters and topped off by another surprising performance from Viggo. Great film.

The only redeeming qualities about this film are that Viggo Mortensen does a wonderful job as one of the scariest villains I've seen, and that it ended.

Action: 3/3, Comedy 0/2, Good vs. Evil 1/1, Romance/Love 1/1, Special effects 0.5/1, Plot 1/1, Music 0.5/1. Overall 7/10 or 70%, which is 3/4 stars for my rating system. Mortensen's Oscar-nominated performance highlights this no holds barred venture into the Russian Mafia. Well acted and above avergae telling for the viewer to digest.

Pairing Cronenberg with Mortensen worked in A History of Violence, and it works again here. A solid story, a few twists and one uncomfortable but spectacular fight scene all adds up to a brutal, yet sophisticated film.

A good drama about the Russian Mafia. The movie does drag a little here and there, but the acting is top notch and there are a couple really good scenes. One of the better movies of 2007.
