The English Patient is a lengthy but rewarding epic that has the visual splendor of classic Hollywood romances. But its storytelling is more complex and the romance is decidedly more sensually explicit. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas are excellent as the two lovers whose romance forms the heart of the narrative. Juliette Binoche is good and Naveen Andrews is pretty cool as a mine specialist. Fans of sweeping wartime romances will find much to appreciate here.

"The English Patient" is another example that proves if you want to win Best Picture at the Oscars, make the longest, most boring melodrama the film gods will give you the strength to make.

An epic retelling of a love story that rivals Casablanca and Dr. Zhivago in scale, told in lush cinematography and rich historical setting. It may feel long to some (and it is!), but the characters and vulnerability of the scenes are touching and engrossing.

I'm going to have to disagree with the majority on this one and instead stand with Elaine from Seinfeld, "Quit telling your stupid story, about the stupid desert, and just die already! Die!!!" This is one long, boring movie. Though I do love all these actors (Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas, etc.), I couldn't buy into the characters or the sappy storyline. This is one of those award winners I just don't get. Pure cliched commercialism if you ask me.

Too long for sure and only mildly interesting. The film really is just a romance and should probably been only that because the war stuff does not really work at all. You never really get an idea of any of it. You only get little pieces and find it completely fails on that part. If you like romances though you probably will like it seems.

Epic, is an easy way to put it. It is a very enjoyable movie that can best be watched over 2 days. It has problems with pacing and length, but the concept, direction and action all really make you feel for the charactors.
