“Despair not, one of the thieves was spared; presume not, one of the thieves was not.” - mit Saint Augustine eröffnet der zweite Film des Iren John Michael McDonagh. Später wird die Tochter Fiona (Kelly Reilly) im Beichtstuhl ihres Vaters James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson) verkünden: “I belong to myself, not to anyone else.” Lavelle antwortet: "True. False."

What Lies at the 'Calvary'?

Unknown - wrote on 12/30/2014

'Calvary' is a much different film than expected. We start off with the priest receiving a death threat from an unidentified male in the confession booth, giving him a week's time before the proposed murder. What is he to do? Instead of trying to find the means save his life, he goes on to right the wrongs of the people in his small town. A series of scenes shows him conversing with each townsman and woman, trying to get them to open up. Some lean more towards an investigative nature, due to the impending crime, but it's not treated with importance. I liked most of the individual scenes, but only as individual scenes and not as part of the grand whole. The series of conversations never added to a complete narrative purpose. I wasn't invested in any way. Things come to a bitter …

A good man who found solace in the priesthood after the death of his wife is visited in confession by a child abuse victim who states that he is going to kill him in seven days. From the very first line of the film, it was obvious that Calvary was not going to pull its punches. The fact that the story involves the aftermath of child abuse, domestic violence and a suicide attempt sounds like you should be bracing yourself for an onslaught of bleakness of Mike Leigh proportions, but the fact is that Calvary has a gentle wit and perception that transcends the grim subject matter to create a movingly bitter sweet portrait of a decent man shouldering the burden of guilt for the evils of others. The story does not shy away from the hypocrisy of the historical position of the Catholic church …

"I like you father I really do, that's why am going to killing you". The movie is about father James is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kelly Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral - and often comic - problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in. Okay most of this movie is are main character father James talking to people before he dies on Sunday by his murder and I thought that is boring but I really liked it. Brendan Gleeson was fantastic in this movie and his character was so likable. this movie is not for everybody but I loved it.
