Horrible performances from its cast and boring plot points make "Far and Away" Ron Howard's worst and most forgettable film.

Cruise and Kidman display all the charisma and chemistry of a root vegetable in an unbelievably dull and embarrassing period piece containing nothing of interest beyond some utterly bizarre accents. Dreadful.

The romantic relationship between the then-real-life couple of Kidman & Cruise is the most believable and touching part of this movie. The historical context is a little suspect, but Ron Howard succeeds in capturing some great intimate scenes between the two leads. One of the better Kidman-Cruise pairings.

I like this movie. I happen to think it's very underrated.

Far and Away is as full of Irish cliches as Tom Cruise is full of himself, and, worse, it does as much as it can to show, first, immigrants choking on the American Dream, and then pulling themselves up through pure grit, sex and violence. These would all be very fine things, very cinematic things, very American things, but Ron Howard puffs a silvery romantic aura around even the most squalid whorehouses. This is PG history, folks, fit for the consumption of pampered, whiny girls who dislike the shit and ugliness of real people fucking historically. I loved every minute of it.

Probably one of the better Ron Howard films, Far and Away tells a simple story of a man with a dream and the trials and tribulations of making that dream a reality. Soaring music and the pairing of Cruise and Kidman make this a good film.
