What can only be described as a pure masterpiece, the hypnotic "Farewell My Concubine" is a sprawling historical and romantic epic that moves like a work of Charles Dickens and hits you like Shakespeare. The intricate layering of the drama explores themes of passion, dedication, love, and identity that each take shape depending on how they relate to all the others.

This is a haunting period piece that portrays a sprawling and poetic story that spans many decades and cultures. The film itself features some of the most beautiful and symbolic cinematography from Asian cinema and quiet, but sure portrayals from its ensemble cast.
