Robert Mitchum is terrific casting for the famed private detective Philip Marlowe. He navigates a seedy 1940s Los Angeles in search of a towering hoodlum’s old flame. But he stumbles upon a sinister conspiracy as such stories often go. The mood is cynical but Mitchum serves as its tired but relentless moral center.
