Only a Coen film could have a tagline like "A Homespun Murder Story"; but here it is. Among the most respected films of the 90's, Fargo is a story with a simple message that is told through a funny yet thrilling display of master filmmaking. With memorable and quotable dialogue that pokes fun at the simpleton residents of Minnesota (the homestate of the Coens), Fargo shows the strength of pure and honest love for one's family as well as the corruptive power of money. "There's more to life than money, ya know?" says Margie Gunderson, our pregnant police protagonist. After seeing the hell that is raised and lives that are lost while trying to obtain a big bag of money we can be sure to believe her.

Fargo is the Coen brothers' second best film and probably the best film of 1996. It tells the story of a simple kidnapping plan that goes wrong in almost every way imaginable. Oscar winner Frances McDormand shines as the pregnant police officer assigned to the murders surrounding the crime, and William H. Macey steals the show as the man who initiates the kidnapping. Coen regulars Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare give good performances as the two kidnappers. Directing by the Coens is also superb. The barren winter landscapes on display build up a good lonely atmosphere and make the fact that all these murders are happening believable. Give this movie a chance, it's one of the best of the 1990s... and it's all based on a true story.

This is why the Coen brothers are amazing. They can take any material, their own, others' work, or a true story such as this one, and turn into something outstanding. Great acting, music, scenery, and of course direction. McDormand shows incredible talent in this film, which showcases dark comedy in a terrific mix with suspense and excellent dramatic scenes. Fargo is an absolute must-see, and an instant classic!

Definitely a Coen Brothers' film, Fargo is dark, strange, disturbing and dang good. Frances McDormand does an outstanding job and the local police chief who solves this tragic and gruesome crime. Buscemi is great as the dangerously not-so-bright kidnapper. Macy is also good as the neutered husband who plans the crime in order to get money from his domineering father-in-law. If you like dark and disturbing thrillers, this one is great. It's also gruesome so no young viewers.
