"Covenant" feels like it was only made as another addition to its franchise, but overall is effective enough to lift the film series out of an almost three decade old slump.

At first, I thought that this is another sci-fi disguising to be a very deep film. Well, it's a bit of that and a successful thriller. It is a big plus that we see two Fassbenders instead of casting an untalented one. My only concern in this film is that I don't see solid motivation of each character, like of course, they'll die one by one but I wished there's some degree of depth each and everyone. I haven't seen Prometheus so forgive me if I missed something that could have added a layer to my understanding of the entire film. Predictable ending, but yeah, still a good watch.

A return to form for Ridley Scott. I found Prometheus a bit underwhelming and even though Alien: Covenant tries a little too hard to be like the original Alien trilogy, it is, none-the-less, a definite step above the previous film. Michael Fassbender is especially good at playing both the "David" and "Walter" androids while Katherine Waterston is also good a Ripley-lite. It's violent and exciting, while still expanding on the mythology.

If you're looking for a new formula and plot here take another turn and see something else. Though there's nothing obviously wrong about this production, it is unfortunately stocked entirely by a formulaic plot and characters. There is nothing original in this film, and if you were given the basic beginning of the plot's conflict then you could have written this yourself. The acting is fine, the special effects superb, but it's sad when you know the ending (seriously I probably wouldn't even call it a spoiler if I said what it was) half way through. It's not a bad addition. Just.. forgettable.
