"Alien: Covenant" by Yojimbo

Yojimbo - wrote on 02/03/2019

The colonisation spacecraft Covenant encounters a previously uncharted planet with surprisingly Earth-like properties and sends a team to the surface to investigate.

Rather fittingly considering its theme, Covenant is a kind of hybrid of Prometheus and the original Alien films, and reveals how the creatures from the previous film evolved into H. R. Giger’s fearsome creation. Of course the obvious reaction of many will be “who cares?” and it would be a fair criticism to say that Ridley Scott is in serious danger of crowding out the magic of the original films with lots of unnecessary backstory. Looked at objectively, Covenant is a stylish sci-fi creature feature with a Gothic twist and some suitably tense action sequences. What it lacks for the most part however is interesting …

Major disappointment anno 2017

"They disobeyed a direct order. She buried her husband. No, Karine, it's not that. They don't trust me. And they don't trust me for the same reason the company didn't trust me … to lead this mission."

I never thought I would ever ask the following question: "Mr. Scott, could you draw a line under the whole Alien franchise and concentrate on other projects? Please?". As an "Alien" fan of the first hour, I was deeply disappointed about this film. In hindsight I thought "Exodus : Gods and Kings" was even better. It's best they forget about "Alien : Covenant Sequel" which is scheduled to appear in 2019.

I was actually more excited about "Prometheus" than about this creation. I ignored the whole fuss about the religious and existential aspects in "Prometheus". In my opinion …

DON'T TOUCH THE DAMN SPORES!!!

Ridley Scott is one of the most talented directors working today. But he is also one of the most uneven directors in terms of output. For every Gladiator, there's Robin Hood. For every American Gangster, there's Body of Lies. For every Kingdom of Heaven, there's Exodus; Gods and Kings. And now for Alien, there is Alien: Covenant.
It's a well made movie and there are a few genuine moments of tense thrills and suspense. The score is very low key but effectively ominous. The cast does try their best. Some succeed like Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and oddly enough Danny McBride. The rest are redshirts. No nicer way to say it.
What Alien:Covenant sets out to do is to act as a bridge between the Alien movies and the apparently aborted Prometheus spin-off series. While Prometheus …

A good mix of 'Alien' and 'Prometheus'

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this one, but I did enjoy the fact that this was such a strong tie-in with Prometheus. While it doesn't make this connection as cleanly as some would like, Ridley Scott leverages the hell out of this connection to create the final scene. To be sure, this is classic horror movie with a sci-fi wrapper. You can almost feel yourself wanting to yell 'Don't go in there!' at a number of points in the film. Michael Fassbender delivers a dual-role performance that has the audience fearing him more than the xenomorphs. Katherine Waterston also delivers a great performance that is almost on par with Sigourney Weaver's Ripley (from the first 'Alien' film). The biggest difference being we see her character, Daniels, as a bit more vulnerable, and less hard edged …

Alien: Covenant - Review

"I'll do the fingering"

I liked "Alien: Covenant" a lot. Didn't have much expectations going in and was pleased of what I saw. It improves a lot of the issues people had with "PROMETHEUS" and brings the original horror back to the series. While I can't say "Covenant" is a great movie or anything (or just another alien re-hash). However, at least this movie gives it's prequel a purpose and opens doors for future films. It's a movie for both fans of Alien and Prometheus.

For me, I really liked Prometheus and was interested in the ideas it brought up. I mean, I do agree the character's were idiots, but I wouldn't call the rest of movie complete sh*t because of that. The criticism were so heavy that it made Ridley Scott change his mind of the original plans for the sequels. By giving …
