Can you really base an over 2-hour substantial film around a single iconic photograph? Turns out you can. "Flags of Our Fathers" is a wide lens look at both the valor of reluctant heroes and the public consciousness behind cultural myth making.

Clint Eastwood's war drama is about the soldiers who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima. It's an interesting take on the typical crowd-pleaser by showcasing the psychological toil by the fame and glory surrounding the soldiers. Adam Beach is very good as the lone Native American soldier uncomfortable with the spotlight.

I personally like the Japanese perspective companion piece, but Flags of our Fathers is still a well-made and stirring war film. The battle sequences are kinetically photographed and the heroism of soldiers is on full display as director Clint Eastwood crafts memorable characters, then drops them into combat for us to root for.

Wonderfully depressing. Here we go with propaganda and the misuse of people.

Even though Clint Eastwood was involved in this, it was still not very good.

A poignant, commanding war film which dares to tell an unflattering story; the characters have little depth, although Adam Beach is strong, but Clint Eastwood's direction is sure-handed despite being very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan. Final Grade: B

The acting is just OK. The story gets bogged down and even a little boring at times, but Flags of Our Fathers does the best job of any war film of comparing the real story to the story we only hear about.
