Flags of Our Fathers review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 07/27/2012
A perfection companion to Letters From Iwo Jima. The film revolves around United States Marines of the 28th Marine Regiment, Sgt. Mike Strank, Pfc. Rene Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Franklin Sousley, Sgt. Hank Hansen, and Pfc. Ralph Ignatowski, and John "Doc" Bradley. Adam Beach was effective, Ryan Phillippe's sincere approach to the character was good while the rest did a wonderful job with the supporting role. The camera work and cinematography made you feel you were there, battle scenes were authentic. Screenplay was wonderful with lines like: "One hell of an experience." from Mike and "That island saved a lot of lives." The score was apt and endearing. Flags of Our Fathers is a powerful underrated film of heroism, friendship, commercialism, fabrications, …

"Flags Of Our Fathers" by Yojimbo

Flags Of Our Fathers tells the story of the Allied invasion of Iwo Jima through the eyes of the six soldiers who became iconic when photographed erecting the stars and stripes on the island. Yet another beautifully accomplished and mature film from Clint Eastwood, Flags Of Our Fathers takes an unsentimental look at not only the battle itself, but also the long term psychological effect on the men that fought in it and the way in which a single piece of propaganda can have just as much of an impact as a fleet of battleships. It skillfully and believably represents the battlefield in a way that may not be as visceral as Saving Private Ryan, but still gives a feeling of what it must have been like as well as encompassing every aspect of the invasion, from the infantry landings through to …

Flags of Our Fathers

Flags of Our Fathers is a disappointing film from the talented team of Clint Eastwood and Paul Haggis. This film only mildly entertaining. It moves slowly and lacks excitement. Clint Eastwoods direction is good, although he has a bit to many camera shaking scenes(i'm not at all a fan of that.). There's no doubt in my mind that Paul Haggis is a talented writer/director, but, his screenplay(or lack there of) in this film is laughable, the only good part of the script is the narration. The cast is only decent. Adam Beach and Ryan Phillippe are good in their roles. Barry Pepper, Jamie Bell, Neal McDonough and Robert Patrick are also good. But, Jesse Bradford and Paul Walker(who's barely in it) are bad. The Film has a good score and breath-taking Cinematography, along with outstanding battle …

Eastwood Has Magic Up His Sleeves

I actually enjoyed this a bit more than "Letters from Iwo Jima" because it felt more personal. Familiar faces are abound such as Paul Walker, Jesse Bradford, Ryan Phillippe and Jamie Bell. I guess it's because I grew up watching their films. The story is just heartwrenching and it made me rethink of my ideals regarding wars. Scenes when the Indian American character suffered a breakdown really got to me because even though he was a "war hero," he was still treated as a lesser equal. The battle scenes made me want to look away but couldn't because I wanted to know what would happen to the characters. The cinematography is exquisite; looking at it is almost like listening to poerty or admiring a timeless painting. The nonlinear presentation made this film all the more powerful because each …

Eastwood and His War Films

I was looking forward to both "Flags" and "Iwo Jima." Are they bad movies? No. Are they great? No. Eastwood is a decent director, but for some reason most of his films lack that great feeling or great character that all the perfect (well close to perfect) movies have. This one is no different. There are some really great war scenes that look like "Saving Private Ryan" (a rip off?). And, the story is not bad - the acting is ok - using each actor in their strengths rather than trying to push them into something they are not good at (and look uncomfortable).
Like "Iwo Jima" this also lacks good pacing and climax. It builds some what, but then slows down and drags out until we are bored and depressed, just like the characters. Get it over with, like "Gladiator" did. I didn't want to …
