This movie is basically the same movie as "The Last Starfighter." They are both family friendly, Star Wars/ET themed mash ups.

I remember a few things about this movie. What's funny is that I thought it was made in the '70s. lol.

Nostalgic value for sure - I grew up in the 80s, and this was one of the movies I recall fondly. It may not be as good as say, The Goonies or E.T., but it still has that charm. I don't think it holds up as well as those films, either, but as a look back, it's still worth watching.

There's a fun nostalgic factor for this film, which paints a charming coming of age story against the backdrops of an inventive sci-fi fantasy. It's no E.T. or Close Encounters, but it does have its magical moments and a refreshingly uplifting ending.

I can see why this movie has nostalgia value; the premise is interesting (and was subsequently ripped off for the series "The 4400"). But the child actor's performance is one of the most painful in memory and Paul Reubens is equally painful as robot Max. Only Robin Williams could have been more annoying.

This was one of the coolest movies to watch as a little kid, but the image of this movie is a bit tarnished now that I have seen it as an adult. It isn't a bad film overall, but it was disappointing to me so I am being more harsh than I would be on a newer movie. There are so many things that are ONLY for kids in this movie that it really didn't pass the test of time with me. I think there are much better kids movies that both children and adults can both enjoy. My advice if you haven’t seen this one as an adult is to stay away and remember the adventure as it was. If you must watch it to see for yourself, maybe have some drinks first -- it could only make it better.
