Provocative crime drama that tries to tackle race relations. Only problem is that it seems to prefer overshadowing that with something more exploitative. The raw unbridled ferocity of the racist characters makes them more threatening than what seen even in contemporary cinema. Lee Marvin is solid as the moderate sheriff caught between the Ku Klux Klan and black activists fighting them back. The most amusing bit of trivia is that O.J. Simpson made his film debut here as a vigilante picking off Klansmen to avenge the death of a friend.
