Maybe the grisliest War on Drugs thriller ever, "Sicario" generates enough scenes of raw tension to make up for its emotionally involving shortcomings.

Thanks, Lionsgate! A film like Sicario should take example from David Fincher. Make your trailers mysterious. Instead of the predictable fuzz that was given to the public, and ultimately, the shit film that was given. Deakins does good, but it's marred by mediocre editing. But what irritates me the most is that this film is nothing different from something that I saw long ago. None of the twists work at all because of how predictable it all feels. It is truly a conventional piece of shit. And frankly, the joke is on everyone. What a bad rewrite of Training Day...

Sicario isn't afraid to show the dark reality of the new war on drugs. This is the world of the cartels where brutal executions are the norm and the only way to combat these men is to cross the line and be as brutal as the men you are facing. It also means most of the characters in the film are dubious at best, and the truly good guys come across as too weak to face the harsh reality of the situation. It's bleak but effective and I have no doubt closer to the truth than I want to imagine.

'Sicario' is a brutally realistic crime thriller. The violence is unsettling is the right way. It forces you to accept it's harsh reality, while not turning you off to the movie. If anything, it makes the sudden bursts of action more tense. We follow an FBI agent as she becomes a tagalong on a secretive task meant to take down a drug lord. She is lead on a long trail, only finding out small bits of intel on the mission as it progresses. She's asked to accept hard truths when put in uncomfortable situations. Her determination to uphold laws while those in charge of her are operating outside of them creates a constant clash, and also serves as an allegory the losing battle in the 'war on drugs'.

Del Toro: *bang* *bang* "oh well, they were just drug dealers." Blunt: "you can't do that, its against the law!" A naïve federal agent gets swept up in covert black-ops actions against Mexican cartels. She must choose between sticking to the letter of the law, or punishing those responsible for the carnage which has ravaged the lives of thousands. Josh Brolin plays a carefree mercenary type who is almost cheerful in his cynicism toward the law. Del Toro plays a much darker and mysterious character bent on revenge and warped by the violence.
