"10 Cloverfield Lane" by Yojimbo

A young woman awakens after crashing her car to find herself trapped in an underground bunker with a man who claims that the world above has suffered an apocalyptic attack. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a spin off from J.J. Abrams' found footage creature feature of 2008 in which a huge alien devastates Manhattan, but this film has far more in common with Gareth Edwards' debut Monsters in that it is a story that may have sci-fi overtones but is far more concerned with the characters than special effects and action histrionics. Mary Elizabeth Winstead makes an engaging, courageous and independent heroine but it is John Goodman who commands the screen with an excellent performance that keeps you guessing as to whether he is saviour or psychopath. It's difficult to summarise the story without …

90 Minutes sheer suspense,10 minutes to ruin it

"It's amazing, you people.. You wear helmets when you ride your bikes, you have seat-belts, you have alarm systems to protect your homes. But what do you do when those alarms go off?"

The biggest mistake the creators of this psychological thriller with a bit of SF made, was to give it the title "10 Cloverfield Lane". Those who expect a sequel to the excellent movie "Cloverfield" (one of the best found footage films for me) will feel they've been cheated on. Those who hope this film has nothing to do with it and assume the chosen title is purely a commercial decision, will ultimately be disappointed. "10 Cloverfield lane" is without doubt the most difficult film to write an opinion about, because revealing too much isn't fair to those who still want to see it. I know now that I'm going …

Bunker Down

'10 Cloverfield Lane' is the (sort of) new chapter in the 'Cloverfield' lore? The similarity in titles is basically a means for brand recognition, as the two films share almost nothing else in common. All that aside, this is a rock-solid standalone thriller confined to one location for the entire duration. The underground setting has a claustrophobic vibe which enhances the tensity felt between the characters. Our three actors are great, with Goodman being the standout. He is menacing in his complete unpredictability. We aren't really sure what to make of Goodman's character through most of the duration, but it's clear that he's hiding secret motivations. The clashes between him and Winstead elevate in progression. It becomes a battle of dominance based on wits. This constant …

The Truth Is Up There

First off, hats off to J.J. Abrams and company for pulling off a near impossible feat these days - dropping a gem like this with almost no leadup. Stealth marketing at its best - I was always expecting a sequel to Cloverfield and while this isn't technically a sequel (more like a distant relation) and it an entirely different beast, the film delivers a lot of tense moments and a kicker of an ending that you will either love or hate.

The film is essentially a three-person setup as we first encounter Michelle upset and packing her bags which, we learn soon after, is due to an argument with her boyfriend, Ben (Bradley Cooper provide a cameo voice-only role) and soon after going on a driving trip to who-knows-where she is involved in an accident. She wakes up in a concrete room hooked to …

As the tagline goes, monsters come in all forms...

Dan Trachtenberg makes a great directorial debut with this spiritual successor to 2008's sleeper hit 'Cloverfield'. I say that because I feel compelled to inform readers that whatever you expect because of the word 'Cloverfield' in the title, CHUCK IT OUT THE WINDOW. This is its own movie and honestly '10 Cloverfield Lane' is a superior movie to plain old 'Cloverfield'. Better actors, a tighter script, and serious genuinely masterfully staged tension and suspense. Most of it is courtesy of John Goodman who plays the unstable survivalist Howard who's taken underground to his bunker with two unnerved 'guests' played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr.
Winstead again plays a smart and sensible female character who could have easily been a dumbed down damsel-in-distress. …
