Ironically titled after the 1915 racist propaganda film, "The Birth of a Nation" proves both bold and timely.

The film has impact, but lacks focus and despite some strong performances, it was hard to really connect with those characters, especially when things go from rebellion to all-out massacre. It's still worth watching, but don't expect it to change your life.

Birth of a Nation wasn't that good. Sorry folks. I mean, the film isn't bad or anything like that, but it's not standing ovation good. Like seriously, this got a standing ovation at Sundance? Is it because of that stupid #Oscarsowhite thing. The hype for this was just insane and kind of a waste. I'm glad the Oscar buzz for this died out. The film feels like a rehash of better slave movies. It's doesn't do anything different or unique to the story. It's bland in terms of film making and storytelling. There was no soul or heart to it. Half of it felt made up. The performances were good and couple of scenes that was pretty brutal, but that’s really it.

I disagree with those who say this movie isn't worth watching -- it's an important and fascinating story, and a pretty good telling of it, though I could quibble with some of the directorial choices. My main complaint is that the movie itself lacks the tremendous ambition of the title. Quite possibly, the title+concept is the most significant thing about this movie.
